Free YouTube to MP3 Converter 3.9.33

Free YouTube to MP3 Converter 3.9.33

The minor quibbles we have with Free YouTube to MP3 Converter have nothing to do with its functionality. This effective freeware is ready to go right out of the box, but can be easily customized by the user.

No effort has been made to dress up the program’s utilitarian interface, which consists of seven large buttons, a few fields, and a drop-down menu. A plain text box advises users to paste URLs in the field, and this is all the onscreen guidance you’ll need. Once you see the video title in the field, you click Download and the program goes to work. The process wasn’t lightening quick, but considering the size of some of our test files, it wasn’t bad. Converted files played without a hitch.

The beauty of this converter lies in its simple set up. By default, converted files are saved into the program’s folder in My Documents, and they retain the name of the source video. The files are saved as MP3s, normal quality. These settings are easily changed, though, with quick-access buttons and a drop-down menu. The most work a user might have to do is fill out the fields in the optional Tags fields for artist, title, track, and other information.

Sadly, the program doesn’t integrate with your browser, but you can opt to have it automatically pick up URLs from the clipboard, which eliminates one step from the cutting and pasting process. It also installs the Ask.com Toolbar and resets your home page to the Ask.com Web site by default, so if you don’t want these extras, you’ll have to uncheck some boxes during the installation process. These inconveniences are offset by the fact that this program is not only effective, it also costs nothing to use. We highly recommend Free YouTube to MP3 Converter for any user.

Water Desktop 3.0.1

Water Desktop 3.0.1

This nifty desktop theme turns your monitor into a relaxing, rain-rippled water surface. Water Desktop comes bundled with two background pictures of flowers that rotate on your screen at a user-selected interval. The program’s visual effect is quite realistic, making it tough to tell that the onscreen picture is not actually being rained upon. If you do not care for the flowers, you can choose to display your own images. The thunderstorm sound effects add a nice touch, and we appreciate the ability to customize the appearance of the actual raindrops and apply transition effects. The application also can display a calendar that lets you append simple memos, but you can disable it should you find its presence irksome. We should note Water Desktop exacted a hefty toll on performance when tested with an older PC, so make sure your machine is up to snuff before downloading it. All things considered, this application strikes us as a good remedy against stress.

UltraISO Premium 9.3.6.2750

UltraISO Premium 9.3.6.2750

Highly versatile and especially proficient with boot discs, UltraISO Premium creates, edits, and burns disc images in several popular formats: ISO, BIN, Nero, Alcohol, CloneCD, and Xbox. It also converts images among formats. UltraISO supports data and audio/video discs and includes a simple MP3 encoder, but it really excels at creating bootable discs. It even can create a disc with a menu for booting several OSs.

The interface is well organized, though rather plain, and we wish its icons were more readable. Also on the negative side, the program can’t mount CD images, which will diminish its value for some. However, if you need support for multiple image formats and want to design bootable discs, UltraISO makes a very good pick.

CCleaner 3.03.1366

CCleaner 3.03.1366

The freeware CCleaner hasn’t seen many major revisions since Piriform launched it in 2004, so when you do see a major update, you can be assured that it’s going to come with impressive new tools. CCleaner 3 doesn’t disappoint on that front, introducing two major new features that make it worth the upgrade.

One is a drive wiping tool that can wipe all the data from your hard drive, but can also scrub only the available free space. As with many of the tools in CCleaner, it’s fairly nuanced and allows for a simple one-pass overwrite, a Department of Defense-level three-pass option, a National Security Administration-level seven-pass cleaning, and a 35-pass Gutmann-level deep scrub. The more passes you select, the slower the deletion process.

Another key improvement to CCleaner 3 has been adding more options to pre-existing features. You can now select specific Internet cookies to keep, across all your browsers, while CCleaner deletes the rest in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and Safari. The benefit of this is to keep cookies for specific sites that you know to be safe, such as webmail, while getting rid of the rest that you don’t want tracking you. Note that your browser must be closed for the cookie-deleting feature to work.

Other changes in version 3 include improvements to the internal scanning tech that powers CCleaner, and the interface received some minor tweaks to make icons more visible. If you’re familiar with previous versions of the program, though, you’ll be hard-pressed to find any differences between older CCleaners and the new one. Additional minor changes include a new native installer for 64-bit computers, and environment variables have been added for %SystemDirectory%, %SystemDirectory32%, and %SystemDirectory64%.

Version 3 supports more Windows programs than before, including added support for Microsoft Silverlight Isolated Storage, AVG 2011, Audacity, LogMeIn Hamachi, BitTorrent, and Windows Game Explorer. Pre-existing support has been improved for Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 9 beta, and the torrent managing client Vuze.

For users who are new to the program, in addition to browser tracks cleaning it will clean tracks from other programs, empty your recycle bin, delete temporary files, and clean your Registry, quickly scanning for invalid entries before removing them. CCleaner will also back up your Registry before you hit delete, in case it accidentally removes a crucial component. There’s also a basic, somewhat rudimentary uninstaller for removing any program on your machine. What Registry entries it doesn’t catch, the main Registry checker will, but it’s a two-step process that dedicated uninstallers handle nicely on their own.

In empirical testing, CCleaner 3 appeared to be marginally faster than previous versions. This is probably system dependent, so users with older computers could likely see significantly faster scan and cleaning times than in previous versions.

Problems with CCleaner are minor at best, and it remains a highly-recommended, must-have weapon against system slowdowns, tracking cookies, and the multitudinous debris that can clutter your computer.
